Tricopigmentation with long hair versus short hair

In this article we will explain how we carry out the two different kind of treatments.

Tricopigmentation is rapidly growing in popularity as a treatment for hair loss. It is a perfect solution for hair simulation on its own or in combination with a hair transplant (FUE and FUT) where it can increase the appearance of density. This was discussed recently between Simon Lane and Nicole Large.

The technique we use requires that the special pigment is placed as micro dots (smaller than 1mm in size) and distributed correctly meaning that the spacing simulates the natural distance of hair follicles which is approximately 1 mm. The technique and products we have developed will offer you the best solution possible to create natural looking follicles.

When treating our clients, we depend on the Norwood Scale to determine the level of baldness in men. Depending on the level of baldness we choose either a “Shaved Effect” or a “Density Effect”.

    Density Effect

The Density Effect is only possible if there is enough hair left on the scalp. Below a picture of an example of a case where this technique could be and was successfully used.

In cases like this it is preferable to work with wet hair because this will make it easier to separate the hair when working in the area. Afterwards you can dry the hair but always use the coolest setting of the hair dryer. We want to prevent heat on the scalp at all times after treatment.

This is the densification effect in action. As you can see, this clients hair appears thicker and fuller following his tricopigmentation sessions.

A Density Effect can only be used if the amount of hair in the area to be treated is sufficient enough and the right length according to the rest of the hair in order to remain a natural look. When the difference is too big between the area to be treated and the area with hair the result will look unnatural. In this case we would advise the client to choose the Shaved Effect.

The process of the Density Effect requires a number of sessions, usually 2 consecutive sessions (day 1 and 2 of treatment) and a touch up session after 30 days.

    Shaved Effect

If there is not enough hair to work with the Density Effect, the only option for the client is to choose the Shaved Effect. Many men already adopt a shaved look to minimize the appearance that they are balding, and this style remains the cornerstone of modern scalp micropigmentation techniques.

A short cut between 0.5mm and 1.5mm is the optimal length in combination with the Shaved Effect. This effect simulates the effect of a shaved head of hair.

This is the traditional method of applying tricopigmentation, and is a suitable option for most candidates. Many people utilise the density effect, then revert to the shaved effect when they lose more hair later on.

Following are the cases in which you can apply a shaved effect:

    1. androgenetic alopecia
    2. total alopecia
    3. post wig
    4. alopecia areata
    5. scar coverage
    6. post unsuccessful transplant

The process of the Shaved Effect requires a number of sessions, usually 2 consecutive sessions (day 1 and 2 of treatment) and a touch-up session after 30 days.
